Wow, the sound is awesome!

Macally TUNEFAN Speakers Subwoofer Cooling

Macally TUNEFAN Speakers Subwoofer Cooling

Have only had a couple of weeks, so I cannot speak to durability. Since that directly effects "Value for money", I cannot rate that aspect.
The little warm spot below the keyboard of my new Dell at my left hand went completely away. Stays totally cool now.
Pandora Radio sounds really good through the speakers. Half a room filling sound.
Intutive installation and plug'n'forget technology. When I close my computer, it shuts itself down - only to restart, again by itself, when I do.
The fan is very quiet, but one can hear it.
Two small complaints; 1. Needs longer power cord. I cannot understand how the engineers wouldn't provide a cord at least as long as my computer power cable. And 2. There are little optional rubber bumpers that may be installed on "clearly marked" locations. If I had Superman eyes, maybe I could see these "clearly marked" locations. As it is, I cannot. Had to go by the illustration. Both complaints together don't amount to much.
I really like the angle this device imparts to my keyboard very much. Feels much more natural.
A product that warrants taking time from my busy, busy life to say something positive about.

  1. My boyfriend uses this all the time, he loves the speakers and the cooling fan really helps a lot while he's editing videos. I steal it to play Minecraft (which can occasionally make my lap catch fire), and it definitely helps to keep my MBP cool and functional.

  2. Note: This item was recently discussed in three MyMac Podcasts -- numbers 288, 289, and 290, FYI.

TuneFan is my favorite idiosyncratic computer accessory for 2010. It is a USB-powered laptop cooling fan with a an efficient built in stereo speaker, plus a totally pointless blue glow. The fan is quiet enough to blend into the ambient noise of an office or classroom. A 2.1 speaker delivers spatial stereo to left and right of your laptop computer (any make and model), with bonus bass sensations between your thighs when TuneFan is resting on your lap.

Compared to most laptop computer fans, this product is physically larger and less attractive at first glance. Five minutes using it as a musical lap desk changes that impression forever. It is comfortable on the thighs, and has perfect pitch for typing. Speaking of pitch, TuneFan's native sound output is bass-heavy. The iTunes Equalizer easily allows users to boost midrange and treble for better overall music playback.

Volume is controlled from the source device, which can connect via USB or mini-audio plug. In iTunes, the Equalizer has a Preamp boost slider that can crank up a TuneFan's top volume to really annoy your neighbors, or rock a house party, without any distortion.

TuneFan doesn't deplete a laptop computer's battery excessively quickly when used with USB power. When AC power is available, use it worry-free with the included plug from Macally.

I tested TuneFan's speaker quietly in my living room one evening to make sure it worked. The next day, without comment to my house guests, I started playing music on it from my MacBook Pro, sitting outside on the patio. I gradually raised the volume until they stopped talking, looked at me, and asked where that LOUD music was coming from - certainly not the computer's pathetic speakers!

TuneFan is the only computer accessory that actually gets a seal of approval from my skeptical spouse. She thinks it is hilarious, very clever, and really useful. I'm going to try to take it on our driving vacation this summer. My MacBook Pro will stay cool whether I'm playing cool jazz or hot rock. Hearty recommendation, with a MyMac Review Rating of 9 out of 10.

  3. The speakers on this thing, matched with the sub, are amazing. I used to practice for a dance rehearsal for a wedding and found it to be very helpful. Not only that, I can keep this on top of something like a bed or blanket, where before, such a material would block the fan, causing my laptop to overheat. Now, I don't have to worry about overheating. I play Starcraft and I have the settings on ultra, so, yah, i need the extra cool and it does not overheat.

  5. I bought this item in March 2010. (9 months ago) After I ordered a gaming laptop I needed something to cool the laptop and wanted a sound that was richer and theater like when gaming. This item appeared to be the best solution for me. When it arrived I was astonished with the sound that it produces. The cooling fan works well under normal conditions. When I am gaming it still gets pretty hot but that is to be expected with an i7 840QM processor and NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 1 GB while running some of the newer games. Overall this has been one of the best laptop accessory I have purchased. After 9 months of daily use, it's still running perfectly and the sound is still amazing!

  6. I have had a couple of cheap laptop coolers in the past. Nothing wrong with lower priced cooling fans, they just don't last very long. This one on the other hand, is not cheap. With that said, I want to say I do not regret paying the premium for this item. The fan is super quiet and the speakers sound very good. They are a great improvement over the built-in speakers. I am buying another for my son's gaming computer.

  7. Great solution for two common problems, laptops get hot and the built in speakers rarely sound good.
I have tried many solutions for my MacBook Air and this is by far the best combination of style, design and build quality.
Very easy to use, plug in the included USB cord and Mac OS X instantly recognizes the device.
A separate power cord is provided, but wasn't needed by my computer. However when i did plug it in, the speakers performed even louder.
The sound quality is very impressive for this product type. I own ipod speakers by JBL, Logitech, Harmon Kardon, Sony...etc. and the TUNEFAN keeps up with the best of them. Not a lot of bass, but great stereo separation. A separate audio input is included for connection to other devices. Power is switchable from speakers only or speakers and fan. The fan is very quiet considering how large it is, and yes it does glow blue like the rendering.
Another great feature is the cut out in the front is lined with rubber which serves to grip the laptop and keep it in place.
If you like good design, ease of use and own a laptop, definitely worth considering the TUNEFAN.
Props to [...], ordered on Sunday delivered on Tuesday.

  8. Hubby got a new laptop with no so great speakers. This really improves his sound! And we like the fact that it has the ability to support his mp3 player and USB. Plus, the cooling fan really works well.

  9. This is fanastic for my son's Mac laptop. He loves the fact that he can crank up his music while keeping his laptop cool.
